Who is this Course For?

This course helps new and experienced Jira application administrators and project admins build and test custom automation rules. It’s also useful for anyone interested in improving team and process efficiency like project managers, leaders, and business analysts. The needs of the organization are best achieved when administrators and business leaders work together. We’ll mainly focus on the built-in automation capabilities in Jira. We’ll also discuss adding automation capabilities using apps from the Atlassian Marketplace.

New to Jira Administration?
If you’re new to Jira administration, take my Jira: Basic Administration and Jira: Advanced Administration courses first. This course assumes you already know how to create, configure, and manage Jira projects and settings. This course only focuses on automation concepts and rule building.

Course Updates

  • In October 2025, Jira projects will be renamed Jira spaces across all Jira Cloud products (including Jira Service Management and Jira Product Discovery).
  • In April 2025, Atlassian changed the name of everything you track in Jira Cloud from issues to work or work items. The naming change is to support Jira Cloud as the place of work for all teams. This change does not apply to Jira Data Center and records in the database are still called issues.
  • Third-party apps from the Atlassian Marketplace were once called add-ons and plugins. In April 2025, Atlassian shifted away from calling their tools products to also calling them apps.
  • In May 2024, Atlassian announced that Jira Software and Jira Work Management are combined under the brand name Jira.
  • In the “Capabilities in Jira” section (in chapter 1), I mentioned Jira Service Management has some legacy automation capabilities that will one day be decommissioned. Atlassian has since announced that they will turn off Legacy automation for NEW Jira Service Management sites. “For Jira Service Management sites created after August 30, 2021, you will see one automation choice in your project settings.” For EXISTING JSM users: “You will not lose access to Legacy Automations on existing sites where you can continue using and editing rules as you have before.” Read more
