Jira Tips and Tricks Collection: Finding All Child Items

JQL function to query for child work items

Tip Relates To

Application TypeJira, Jira Service Management
Deployment TypeCloud Premium
AudienceEnd Users
CategoryWork Items, Reporting

Tip

Looking for a list of all work items related to an Epic, Feature, Initiative, or other high-level Jira item? Use a query like: issuekey in portfolioChildIssuesOf(ITEM-1) to return the list.

Bonus: Also return the parent item and and any items linked to it with a query like: key = ITEM-1 or issuekey in portfolioChildIssuesOf(“ITEM-1“) or issue in linkedIssues(ITEM-1) ORDER BY key ASC

Explanation

It is surprisingly difficult to query for child work items! Luckily, the Jira Plans feature (once called called “Portfolio for Jira”) introduced a JQL function that can do it.

Note: This function only works in Cloud Premium.
